Age is Just a Number

scan0004

In April of 2008, when I turned 45, my sister sent me this card.  Inside she wrote “And I would have to guess.  I can’t even remember how old I am anymore!”

Every day as I sit in my little writing room in the old hotel downtown, I look at this petulant little girl stuck up on my wall.  I love her face.  It’s not my birthday today, but I thought I’d share her with my readers, along with two other great quotes about age:

I like that my sister can’t remember her age anymore.  After all, it’s just  a number!

  1. Love the one about the cheese! I gues that can include wine and use-by dates as well!

  2. Yes, indeed. And I'll be about 21 until the end of time.

  4. I believe we have mental ages and physical ages and mentally I'm 32 and shall remain that way for the foreseeable future.

  5. And Betty Davis said, "Getting old isn't for sissies."

But then again, "old" is a state of mind.

  6. I once hosted a dinner for 12 girlfriends and I posed the question: how old do you feel inside? The answers ranged from 19 to 55 and we were all about the same age!

I think I will always be 19 years old inside, perpetually on the verge of new horizons, always thinking the best is yet to come. I'm not sure if that is foolish or hopeful.

  7. I like the question Ingrid posed to her friends. I never, ever feel my age inside. I would say older is better. Definitely.

  10. I love that card1 When does that fear of age thing start, anyway? In Okinawa, btw, you aren't considered an adult until 50. Think I'll move there one day...

  12. I my mid-late-twenties, I sometimes forgot what my exact age was: "Wait, am I 26? Or 27 or 28? Let me think about it for a sec..." When I hit 29, I was so excited about being almost 30 that I didn't have to stop and think about it. And now that I'm 30, obviously I'm very aware of my age because I consider it a joyful milestone. But I suspect I may encounter the same forgetfulness again in six or seven years.

    And really, I feel 30. I have felt 30 since I was perhaps 25. And I like feeling 30!

  13. I always feel like a party pooper--but my hips are starting to ache, which I think means arthritis. My mental age is young, but-oh-those aches and pains.

  14. Age really is just a number. The older I get the happier I feel in my skin- but in my heart I'm still young an full of creativity. Exceptt when I'm around my teens and they get the best of me..everything starts hurting and my pressure boils- then, I feel old (or maybe I wish I were so old and done with all the drama!!)

  15. Age? Who is starting this up again? What we need is a test to get to the next stage. Yes, something that asks us if we are willing to give up the goodies of each age, like pimples in our teen years. What will we say? Dump the pimples, give me dewy clear skin.

We'll make the same mistake every decade.

  16. It says in your post, your birthday was in APRIL.....(yes I READ your posts LOL)

When I turned 46, my grandmother had to remind me how old I was. I was going around telling everyone 45. So can we be like Benjamin Button and go backwards? :D

  19. I often have to calculate from my birthdate (1967) and then try to remember, "What the hell year is this?" to get my age.

    I feel like 30 something.

  20. Age doesn't matter. It's just good to be alive.

    Happy every day!

  21. Great insights and comments everyone. Thank you! I think I'll move to Okinawa, where I wouldn't have to be a grown up for four more years.
