Use Your Cell Phone to Help in Haiti.

As of sixteen hours ago, Americans with cell phones had raised $11 million for relief in Haiti through sending text messages to relief phone numbers.

If you haven’t seen these numbers yet, here are several easy ways to donate small amounts of money.  Your donation is added into your cell phone bill.

Relief organizers are reminding people—like me—who are tweeting and blogging about this--to actually make the calls themselves.  That’s a good point.  In my effort to round up numbers for my post, I initially forgot to make the calls myself.

I chose Yele Haiti, which is working with Haitian-born singer Wyclef Jean to mobilize their effort.  You can $5 donations up to six times to Yele Haiti.

Text YELE to 501501 to donate $5 to Yele Haiti, which is working with Wyclef Jean.

Text HAITI to 90999 to donate $10 to the American Red Cross

Text HAITI to 25383 to donate $5 to International Rescue Committee

Text HAITI to 45678 to donate $5 to the Salvation Army in Canada

Text RELIEF to 30644 to get automatically connected to Catholic Relief Services and donate money with your credit card

Text HAITI to 864833 to donate $5 to The United Way

Text CERF to 90999 to donate $5 to The United Nations Foundation

Text DISASTER to 90999 to donate $10 to Compassion International

Sallymandy: Great idea to group all the numbers together in one place! Sometimes one can hear a number, but it is not linked with your 'favorite' relief agency and so you hold back. With them all right in front of us there is no excuse not to pick up and dial. Thanks.

Good for you, Sallymandy! It's really remarkable how communications technology has made this kind of help much easier and more immediate.

I've donated 50 kronor to Doctors without Borders. I've also contributed one of my songs and designed a cover, which might or might not make it to a CD - with lesser known electronic musicians in support of the British Red Cross.

Great idea of cell phone. It's really a great technology of communication. You can use your cell phone to make a contribution to support the people of Haiti, who are suffering most recently from the terrible earthquake, but also from years of colonialism, dicatorships and extreme poverty.

It's really hard to watch the suffering in Haiti and feel we have anything to contribute, but money is always needed and this is an easy way to donate. Thanks, everyone.
