Essential Chocolate Cake

My friend, the Artista Fabulosa Jean, sent this most excellent recipe to me:  a five minute chocolate cake you make in the microwave in a coffee mug.  I think it’s been making the rounds on the Internet.

I’m abstaining from wheat and have not made this.  One review online said it’s messy.  One said it’s more like a chocolate pudding than a cake.  Many said it’s yummy.  If you’ve tried it, let us know! 

Five Minute Chocolate Mug Cake

4 tablespoons flour
4 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons cocoa
1 egg
3 tablespoons milk
3 tablespoons oil
3 tablespoons chocolate chips (optional)
A small splash of vanilla extract
1 large microwaveable coffee mug 

Add dry ingredients to mug, and mix well.  Add the egg and mix thoroughly.   Pour in the milk and oil and mix well.  Add the chocolate chips (if using) and vanilla extract, and mix again.  Put your mug in the microwave and cook for 3 minutes at 1000 watts.  The cake will rise over the top of the mug, but don't be alarmed!  Allow to cool a little, and tip out onto a plate if desired.  EAT!

Would you like to hear my bad fortune? I just decided to start a diet tomorrow and now I have this recipe and the knowledge that in five minutes I could have cake.;-) It looks so good!!! I particularly like the little dollop of whipped cream! Yummmy!

Heh, this looks like a reduced-proportion variation of the microwaved brownies recipe that we made all the time when I was a little kid. That was back when home microwaves were still a pretty new thing. My mom took a microwave cooking class, and we bought a lot of microwave cookbooks and whatnot. It seems like a LOT of our meals were made in the microwave back then, even when making it in the oven or on the stovetop wouldn't be any more of a hassle. The brownie recipe was the only one that I copied to take with me when I went to college. Sometimes I made them in the dorms, and you can imagine the crowd that would be drawn by the scent of "fresh-baked" brownies. It always turned out rather gooey in the middle and hard on the outside, but it didn't matter, because it usually disappeared pretty quickly!

I haven't used that recipe in years, though. I think I'm going to have to give this a try... cake, brownie, mug of goo, whatever it is, it all sounds great to me if there's chocolate involved.

I am SO excited to try this out(sort of a mini Molten Lava Cake?) and impress the husband and child.(actually, a very good thing to show the child how to make for herself)

I am actually being Miss Housewife today on my day off, with a Crockpot dinner all planned(slow-cooked Baked Beans, cornbread and coleslaw from scratch) and to top off the evening with this microwaved cake would be perfect!

My brother tried this recipe and told me it was kind of chewy - but - okay. He's a chocolate fanatic so very picky.

Fortunately I'm a celiac - so I can pass it up - but reading this while having my morning coffee.....arghhhhhh!

Wow, this is great. All those ingredients are usually in the pantry. I typically don't bake because if it was a whole cake I would eat every bite. This way I can dive in without the overwhelming guilt.

I love it. Who cares if it's messy.

I never get tired of chocolate, but I'm not much of a baker. . . I mostly like to keep my house temptation free unless I'm eating it right away!

I've seen this before, but I'm reluctant to try it (worried about an explosion in my microwave). I do make a very cakey chocolate pudding that is really simple, but bakes in the oven. (It is scrumptious with vanilla ice-cream).
I haven't made it for a while, but that needs to change.

I tried this recipe this week. First for me it was 2 servings. I dumped it out of the cup and cut it in half. Then I let it cool just a bit, but you must eat it soon. Don't let it completely cool cause it tends to become "heavy and hard" It tastes really rich when it is warm. Don't skip the chocolate chips it needs it for the sweet taste.

I did finally try this recipe--it was much as Sher(above) described it--a little heavy(and chewy lke a brownie), and best eaten right away(I ate it with some vanilla ice cream on the side and split it with Mr. F since it is very rich!
And..I don't want you to think I always present my family with Donna Reed meals lke the one I made a few weeks ago. I have often serve plain old quesadillas and rice, and even pancakes are a common supper n our house.
