My friend, the Artista Fabulosa Jean, sent this most excellent recipe to me: a five minute chocolate cake you make in the microwave in a coffee mug. I think it’s been making the rounds on the Internet.
I’m abstaining from wheat and have not made this. One review online said it’s messy. One said it’s more like a chocolate pudding than a cake. Many said it’s yummy. If you’ve tried it, let us know!
Five Minute Chocolate Mug Cake
4 tablespoons flour
4 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons cocoa
1 egg
3 tablespoons milk
3 tablespoons oil
3 tablespoons chocolate chips (optional)
A small splash of vanilla extract
1 large microwaveable coffee mug
Add dry ingredients to mug, and mix well. Add the egg and mix thoroughly. Pour in the milk and oil and mix well. Add the chocolate chips (if using) and vanilla extract, and mix again. Put your mug in the microwave and cook for 3 minutes at 1000 watts. The cake will rise over the top of the mug, but don't be alarmed! Allow to cool a little, and tip out onto a plate if desired. EAT!

Would you like to hear my bad fortune? I just decided to start a diet tomorrow and now I have this recipe and the knowledge that in five minutes I could have cake.;-) It looks so good!!! I particularly like the little dollop of whipped cream! Yummmy!
Never thought I'd ever say this but definitely prefer the backwards darling! YUM*
I think I may try it for my children tonight!
Mmm, I love chocolate cakes; this one I have to try. Although I am a lousy cook, I like to bake.;))
I'm going to try it. Entirely for the boys...not me. I'm being good. Ok not so good....maybe I'll just take a bite ;)
Heh, this looks like a reduced-proportion variation of the microwaved brownies recipe that we made all the time when I was a little kid. That was back when home microwaves were still a pretty new thing. My mom took a microwave cooking class, and we bought a lot of microwave cookbooks and whatnot. It seems like a LOT of our meals were made in the microwave back then, even when making it in the oven or on the stovetop wouldn't be any more of a hassle. The brownie recipe was the only one that I copied to take with me when I went to college. Sometimes I made them in the dorms, and you can imagine the crowd that would be drawn by the scent of "fresh-baked" brownies. It always turned out rather gooey in the middle and hard on the outside, but it didn't matter, because it usually disappeared pretty quickly!
I haven't used that recipe in years, though. I think I'm going to have to give this a try... cake, brownie, mug of goo, whatever it is, it all sounds great to me if there's chocolate involved.
I am SO excited to try this out(sort of a mini Molten Lava Cake?) and impress the husband and child.(actually, a very good thing to show the child how to make for herself)
I am actually being Miss Housewife today on my day off, with a Crockpot dinner all planned(slow-cooked Baked Beans, cornbread and coleslaw from scratch) and to top off the evening with this microwaved cake would be perfect!
My brother tried this recipe and told me it was kind of chewy - but - okay. He's a chocolate fanatic so very picky.
Fortunately I'm a celiac - so I can pass it up - but reading this while having my morning coffee.....arghhhhhh!
My dear Sallymandy...that's what I love about your blog- you're so versatile and always posting such interesting stuff! My interest for history is neverending and I do have such a passion for it; but you have a nack for making every subject a 'must read'! Thanks:)
Wow, this is great. All those ingredients are usually in the pantry. I typically don't bake because if it was a whole cake I would eat every bite. This way I can dive in without the overwhelming guilt.
I love it. Who cares if it's messy.
Cake? In a mug? In three minutes? You have to package and sell these a.s.a.p. You will be a millionaire overnight. You can then send me my usual fare: 50% of profits in products, of course.
Congratulations. There is got to be a special award for someone who simplifies our gratifications.
Brava!
Yeah thank goodness..this was on Steve wright the other afternoon as I was driving, back form Kent I think.. Obviously I couldna write it down...
I never get tired of chocolate, but I'm not much of a baker. . . I mostly like to keep my house temptation free unless I'm eating it right away!
This is too easy to pass up! And anything with chocolate gets my undivided attention...
Grazie for this, SM!!!
Ciao
I've seen this before, but I'm reluctant to try it (worried about an explosion in my microwave). I do make a very cakey chocolate pudding that is really simple, but bakes in the oven. (It is scrumptious with vanilla ice-cream).
I haven't made it for a while, but that needs to change.
Kat
You're teasing me.... I love chocolate cake.... now I want!!!
xoxo
Hello! greetings from Guatemala. Gal Friday suggested visiting your page, as I'm in mission of learning how to bake, so I'm in need of easy recipes at the moment and this one sounds very simple!
You have a deeply interesting blog! so if I may, I'll be coming back often.
Be well!
Belette: this recipe will always be there! And you could make it for you and five other dieting friends and everyone gets three bites. :)
Lenore, Jane, Protege: I'd love to know how it turns out.
Stephanie: Yes, mug of chocolate goo--sounds great to me, too.
Gal: I'm impresed with your entire dinner, planned out and ready to go. If I had a comedy blog, I could post regularly about what I serve my family.
Sorry, aims!
Ms Lucy, you're so kind. Thanks, dear. The variety reflects the scattered nature of my head.
Pyzahn: Exactly. It's all about portion control.
Okay, Lakeviewer. I'll let ya know when the bucks start flowing in. This isn't even my recipe!
FFF: It's probably been all over the globe, by now!
Maria: That's the same for me. I can't have stuff lying around.
Lola: You're being too kind. I have a feeling this is a far cry from the kind of 'real' dessert you can conjure up, culinary maestra.
Kat: Micro-explosions aren't fun, I agree.
Seeker: yes, somehow I thought if I passed this on to you I could share the temptation.
Thanks, Claus! I appreciate the visit and the kind comment.
Oh, yeah. I have GOT to try this.
I tried this recipe this week. First for me it was 2 servings. I dumped it out of the cup and cut it in half. Then I let it cool just a bit, but you must eat it soon. Don't let it completely cool cause it tends to become "heavy and hard" It tastes really rich when it is warm. Don't skip the chocolate chips it needs it for the sweet taste.
I'm trying it! But not today because I already had a cupcake. It was a Strawberry Shortcake cupcake from a cupcake cafe called Sweet on Massachusetts Avenue (if you're ever in Boston!)

I did finally try this recipe--it was much as Sher(above) described it--a little heavy(and chewy lke a brownie), and best eaten right away(I ate it with some vanilla ice cream on the side and split it with Mr. F since it is very rich!
And..I don't want you to think I always present my family with Donna Reed meals lke the one I made a few weeks ago. I have often serve plain old quesadillas and rice, and even pancakes are a common supper n our house.
